Son Music
With origins dating as far back as the 16th century, Son music has elements of Euro-Spanish guitar and voice and African rhythms blending into the "Son-Cubano" mix.
Son is thought to be the ancestor of Salsa music, with one theory being that, when Cuban immigrants landed in southern Florida in the  1960's, they discovered electric instruments and transformed the Son sound into what we now know as modern Salsa. Many scholars would also argue that the birth of modern Salsa took place in New York around the same time.
